The direct methanol liquid feed fuel cell (DMLFFC) is a promising candidate for replacement of military Li battery packs and for other low pressure portable applications. For this fuel cell, the best methanol oxidation catalyst identified to date is the Giner, Inc, 60 wt% Pt-40 wt% Ru catalyst. A loading of this catalyst of 8 mg/cm(2) has been shown to provide high fuel cell performance while maintaining high catalyst utilization. A 5-cell DMLFFC stack has demonstrated stable performance over 2000 hours of operation and approximately 230 start/stop cycles. Power of greater than 125W has been achieved. A miniaturized stack is being developed to meet the volume, weight and power requirements of the BA5590 Li battery pack.
