摘要
BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation is the most common irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Irisin is a novel muscle-derived myokine that is discharged from the muscle promptly after work out suggested to mediate some of the beneficial effects of exercise. Adiponectin is an adipokine that can induce multiple metabolic effects including glucose homeostasis and fatty acid oxidization. In this study, we investigate whether there is a correlation between circulating irisin and adiponectin levels and the development of atrial fibrillation. METHODS: In 80 individuals, including patients and controls, we measured fasting serum levels of irisin and adiponectin. RESULTS: Serum irisin and adiponectin levels were significantly higher in patients with AF compared to controls (P<0.05). A correlation analysis (r=0.493, P=0.001) revealed that irisin and adiponectin levels were positively associated with atrial fibrillation. CONCLUSIONS: Although the precise mechanisms are still unclear, it is conceivable that irisin and adiponectin might contribute to the development of atrial fibrillation-related symptoms.
