Corrosion protection of mild steel by zirconia sol-gel coatings

摘要
The effect of zirconia coatings on the corrosion resistance of mild steel was studied via potentiodynamic polarization curves in 1N HCl solution at 29°C. When heat-treated at 400°C, the zirconia coatings are homogeneous and not cracked. However, there are many cracks and pores in the coatings heated at 600°C. When heated at 800°C, there are no cracks, but some surface relief the coatings. The homogeneous coatings, without cracks, heat-treated at 400° and 800°C increase the corrosion resistance of the mild steel by a factor of 6.3 and 2.3, respectively. In contrast, the coatings contained at 600°C have no effect on the corrosion resistance of the substrate.
