Solvent soluble fluoropolymers have been used in the coating field since the early 1980s. In recent years, there has been strong demand in the market to develop water-borne fluoropolymers for coatings because of environmental considerations and solvent emission controls. In this paper, newly developed water-borne fluoropolymers will be discussed. The novel fluoropolymers, composed of fluoro-olefin, olefin and vinylester monomers, show extremely good weatherability and have adequate properties for Various types of paint. The chemistry and film properties of the polymers will be described. Furthermore, the authors will present some actual applications, including architectural finishes.
