Evaluation of writing products in Turkish courses based on creative writing approach

Problem Statement: Most of the educators and writers in Turkey criticise the education system which involves teacher-centred, rote learning, keeping children away from critical thinking, inhibiting creativity, constrained and authoritarian practices. It is therefore important to determine the quality of the written expression outcomes in terms of creative writing which takes place in Turkish courses practices Purpose of Study: The study presented in this dissertation aimed at evaluating students' written expression works (compositions) created in the ongoing writing practices in Turkish courses based on traits of creative writing approach Methods: In this study, documentary analysis method was used in the qualitative research approaches. All the grade 6, 7 and 8 students were selected as population in the primary schools of central area of Balikesir. Maximum variation was used as sampling strategy, draw total of 266 students as data source by selecting each grade from the higher, medium and lower achieved schools in the OKS exam.: Qualitative data were obtained from students' written narrative works about an essay topic designed in accordance with creative writing approach;Qualitative data set was analyzed with the inductive content analysis technique which was specifically developed by the researcher for this study. Findings and Results: Qualitative results of the study suggest that the higher the success level of the schools in Turkish courses, the more appropriate the students' writing products are regarding grammar, spelling and punctuation, and overall aesthetic. In addition to this, the students, in general, exhibited close-minded, quoting way of thinking in creative ideas; it was concluded that they were inadequate in generating empathy and divergent thinking. In terms of linguistic creativity, it was observed that the majority of students used a general expression language, definition sentences, and advisory sayings.
