The past two decades or so have seen the once futuristic Next-Generation Skywave Over-the-Horizon Radar become a reality. The performance improvement challenges set in the early 2000s, around small-target detection, maritime domain awareness and mitigating deleterious clutter have been met. Extensive technology and radar architecture development and demonstration programs have made the previously impossible the new normal, and modern OTHR built using these developments can now affordably meet current and future wide-area surveillance challenges, with the exception only of trans-polar surveillance.
