ADELARDO LOPEZ DL AYALA AND HIS VERSION OF EL ALCALDE ZALAMEA BY CALDERON DE LA BARCA

This paper analyzes in detail a little-known rewriting of the Calderonian tragedy El alcalde de Zalamea carried out in the middle of the 19th century by the writer and playwright Adelardo Lopez de Ayala. The text of the nineteenth-century version is inserted into the aesthetic controversy over the value of baroque theater in the so-called "Calderonian quarrel", which confronted supporters and detractors of the dramaturgy of don Pedro Calderon de la Barca. The version written by Lopez de Ayala shows him as a firm defender of the theater of the great baroque playwright.
