A new complex, [Co-2(NDC) (BIPY)(2)(H2O)(6)] center dot (NDC) (NDC=2,6-napathalenedicarboxylate, BIPY =2,2'-bipyridine), has been obtained by solvent method and characterized by IR, TG-DTA and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The complex belongs to Triclinic system, P (1) over bar space group with a=0.922 39(4) nm, b=1.126 16(5) nm, c=1.221 19(6) nm, alpha=94.857(3)degrees, beta=111.843(2)degrees, gamma=112.200(3)degrees, V=1.05205(8) nm(3), Z=2, D-c=1.526 Mg.m(-3). The complex is composed by [Co-2(NDC)(BIPY)(2)(H2O)(6)](2+) cation and one free NDC anion. The Co2+ cation is linked with one oxygen atom of NDC, two nitrogen atoms of BIPY, and three oxygen atoms of water molecules, forming a distorted octahedral environment. The NDC ligand links two Co2+ cations by a bis (monodentate) fashion to form a cationic unit. There are intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the coordinated water molecules and the coordinated water molecule and coordinated NDC ligand, giving rise to 1D metal-organic cationic chain. In addition, hydrogen bonds are formed between the coordinated water molecule and noncoordinated NDC ligand. So, 3D supramolecular network is formed through these hydrogen bonds. CCDC: 752894.
