Ultrasound Evaluation of the Umbilical Artery Blood Flow

Examination of the fetal and the placental circulation by Doppler ultrasound is a key application in perinatal medicine. During spectral Doppler sonography investigation, Systolic(S) or peak systolic velocity (PSV) and diastolic-(D) or end diastolic velocity (EDV) are recorded. Using this pharameters, in clinical obstetrics, several indices are calculated. This study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics of the County Emergency Hospital Timisoara, Romania. Umbilical artery velocity waveform was measured by Doppler sonography in 82 pregnant women in their second or third trimester. The mean gestational age at the time of fetal anatomic ultrasound survey was 25.3 +/- 1.9 weeks, and the mean maternal age was 37 +/- 2.83 years (range, 17 divided by 43 years), with a median parity of 2 (range, 0 divided by 5).
