摘要
In comparison with Graham Swift's masterpieces Waterland and Last Orders, The Sweet-Shop Owner as his first novel has obviously been unduly neglected by critics. As a matter of fact, this novel has in it all the themes and motifs recurring throughout his later fiction. Based on the analysis of the novel's leading character Willy Chapman, this paper focuses mainly on the ethical notion of "exchange" embodied in the novel, so as to shed some light on Swift's profound conception of humanity and modern society. If "pattern" is supposedly characteristic of Chapman's conduct of affairs, "exchange" is another major trait. With him, these two supplement and complement each other. In a way, exchange is based on patterns.
