Neuroleptics, antipsychotic drugs acting as dopamine antagonists have the potential to cause a variety of early and tardive side-effects. Drug-induced parkinsonism is one of the commonest extrapyramidal disorders. Its diagnosis and differentiation from other possible causes, especially from idiopathic Parkinson's disease, and the choice of adequate treatment strategy present current problems in neurological and psychiatric practice. Thereafter atypical neuroleptics, antipsychotic drugs differing from typical neuroleptics by the absence of extrapyramidal side effects, are increasingly used in the treatment of neurological affections including idiopathic Parkinson's disease.
