Rare monomeric-dimeric copper(II) cinnamate complexes in one single crystal: Syntheses, characterization, structure determination and DFT studies of two copper(II) complexes

Rare monomeric as well as dimeric Cu(II) complexes, [Cu-2(beta-pic)(4)L-4][Cu(beta-pic)(2)L-2(H2O)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (1), (where L = cinnamate and beta-pic = beta-picoline) in one single crystal have been synthesized by the reaction of copper(II) cinnamate and excess of beta-pic while a monomeric complex [Cu(py)(2)L-2(H2O)]center dot py (2) was obtained in a similar reaction by using py (py = pyridine) instead of beta-pic. Both of these copper(II) complexes have been characterized by spectroscopic techniques, TGA, X-ray crystallography and DFT studies. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
