Case report: Torsion of a nongravid nonmyomatous uterus

Torsion of the uterus is a rare condition and is normally prevented by the round and broad ligaments. In almost all cases torsion occurs either of the pregnant uterus or of a uterus enlarged by fibroids. The case presented here is particularly unusual not only because neither of the latter were present, but also because the presentation was one of small bowel obstruction, with radiological evidence of an enlarged gas filled uterine cavity, a sign not previously reported.
