Hot deformation of austenitic stainless steel type 316 up to strain rates of 100s-1

The hot deformation of austenitic stainless steel type 316 up to strain rates of 100 s-1 with chemical composition 0.051C, 1.37Mn, 0.49Si, 0.005S, 16.94Cr, 11.32Ni and 1.87Mo, all numbers in wt%, was studied. The tortion testing at constant temperature and strain rate measurement were carried out using a servo-hydraulic, computer controlled machine equipped with a radiant furnace. The temperatures were measured employing cromel-tube of AISI316 stainless steel. The reults from stress-strain curves show that the prevailing dynamic softening mechanism changed from dynamic recrystallization at strain rates lower than 10 s-1 to incipient dynamic recrystallization at 50 s-1 to dynamic recovery at 100 s-1.
