Observing single electron tunneling events in a superconducting single electron transistor

摘要
We measure in real time the addition or subtraction of individual electrons from the island of a superconducting single electron transistor (SSET). By measuring the microwave conductance of an SSET, we are able to observe both the preference for the island to have an even number of quasiparticle excitations and the rate at which the island changes between even and odd numbers of quasiparticles excitations. The microwave measurements have sufficient bandwidth and sensitivity to resolve the individual parity switching events.
