Large magnetic entropy change in (Pr1-xNdx)0.5Sr0.5MnO3

A large magnetic entropy change (6.5-8 J kg(-1) K-1) has been discovered in (Pr1-xNdx)(0.5)Sr0.5MnO3 (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1) under a low magnetic field of 10 kOe at the charge-ordered state transition temperature. It exceeds the magnetic entropy change (3.1 J kg(-1) K-1) in Gd at 293 K by a factor of two under the same conditions. The physical mechanism is related to the drastic change of magnetization with temperature at the field-induced magnetic, electron and structural phase transition temperature (from antiferromagnetic charge-ordered state to ferromagnetic charge-disordered state).
