摘要
Low oxygen near - alpha titanium alloy 685 has been processed by conventional beta-forging (1025 degrees C+/-25 degrees C) and hot die alpha-beta forging (960+/-20 degrees C) techniques. Microstructural examination in 'as forged' condition revealed coarser & fine acicular platelike alpha in conventionally forged and hot die forged samples respectively. When heat treated(1050 degrees C/30 minutes/OQ+ 550 degrees C/24 hours/AC), hot die forged sample possessed basketweave a in a transformed beta matrix, which is a critical microstructural requirement for creep resistance in alloy 685. In addition to overall balance of properties, creep resistance was increased by about 50% in hot die forged with respect to conventionally forged material, due to structural refinement i.e. finer interface between basketweave alpha and retained beta phases, which acts as obstacles to dislocation motion and create a threshold stress below which creep can not occur.
