摘要
We propose a general principle for the guiding of light waves through heterogeneous metamaterial layers: light waves have a tendency to increase their portion guided through the medium having a larger N(2) value than the neighbors, where N(2) is defined as the product of material permittivity and permeability values. Using this principle, we discuss qualitatively the characteristics of fundamental optical modes in several metamaterial waveguide structures.
