Measuring the Quality of Public Space with the Implementation of Transmilenio in Suba, Bogota

In the theory of transport-oriented development (TOD), the quality of public space (PE) and the characteristics of the urban fabric must respond to the implementation of sustainable transport systems. This research draws on theoretical contributions from the DOT to form ten quality indicators for the EP, assessing aspects such as: connectivity and accessibility, morphology, mix of uses, meeting spaces, safety and comfort. The case study is the Suba area in Bogota, where the Transmilenio system has been built since 2006. Free access databases, geographic information systems (GIS) and multi-temporal photo-interpretation techniques are used in the analysis to determine the change in the indicators before and after the implementation of Transmilenio. It is found that the quality of the EP is deficient and it is evident that the principles of the TOD are not sufficiently implemented in the study area.
