Electromagnetic field analyses were made for mono-layer conductors comprising coated conductors for superconducting power transmission cables in order to evaluate their AC loss characteristics. We focused on the magnetic properties of the substrates of coated conductors. The current distribution in each coated conductor and the magnetic flux profile around each coated conductor were visualized. The influence of relative permeability and the space between coated conductors on the AC loss characteristics of mono-layer conductors were studied based on the visualized current and magnetic flux distributions. The influence of a saturated magnetic property on a calculated AC loss was also discussed. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
