摘要
This review aims at updating the reader on the latest scientific data regarding zirconia ceramic implants. In the past few years, numerous papers have been published dealing with implant stability, osseointegration, and clinical performance. Are these implants working clinically? What are the influencing factors on the different aspects of oral implants (ie, stability, healing, clinical success)? Recent systematic reviews, which evaluated preclinical investigations on implant stability, could show sufficient stability for one-piece zirconia implants (diameter >= 4 mm). The stability of two-piece implants was only a topic in a few investigations. Regarding soft and hard tissue integration, no difference could be found between titanium and zirconia implants with similar surface topography. The short-term clinical results for one-piece zirconia implants are encouraging and are supported by the few mid-term investigations. Due to the low number of investigations for two-piece zirconia implants, no statement can be made regarding their prognosis.
