Information visualization is vital to extracting knowledge from the massive amounts of data currently available. One way to make information more accessible is by portraying data fabulas (a set of time-ordered events caused or experienced by actors), using computer graphics as a narrative medium. On the basis of a fabula, generative storytelling builds, from a dataset, stories with different tones, expressiveness, and emphasis. A visualization of the decline of the major maritime empires illustrates this approach. © 2011 IEEE.
