The Centenary of Independence International Exhibition as a Landmark in the Development of Tourism in Brazil [Rio de Janeiro, January/1920 - December/1922]

This article aims to analyze the effects for the development of national tourism of the International Exhibition of the Centenary of Brazilian Independence held in the city of Rio de Janeiro [Brazil] in the 1920s. More precisely, the investigation seeks to build the hypothesis that the 1922 exhibition was a catalyzing agent in the process of constitution of the modern tourism and leisure sector in the country, both in structural terms and in institutional aspects. For this, the research adopts documental research and bibliographic survey as investigation technique. The primary source used is the Rio de Janeiro newspaper Correio da Manha.
