The aero technology DS superalloy CM186LC(R) has recently been introduced into service as a first stage turbine blade material in one of EGT's range of small industrial gas turbines. This change has resulted from the continuing drive for ever increasing efficiency, reliability and power output. CM186LC is a second generation Directionally Solidified superalloy with mechanical properties close to those of first generation single crystal superalloys. The alloy has good castability and does not require a solution heat treatment, considerations which make this material very attractive in comparison to single crystal alloys. Its chemistry resemblance to the CMSX -2 / -3 and -4 family allows the option to use foundry revert material from these alloys, as well as itself, for the manufacture of remelt stock, providing further cost reduction possibilities. This alloy, however, represents a major break with the tradition at EGT for high chromium alloys, hence placing major importance on coating performance. In this paper the material data evaluation programmes on virgin cast and 100% revert material currently in progress at EGT will be described and compared. In addition experience in production, coating and field service with this alloy will be presented.
