摘要
This paper investigates performance issues that arise when storing, retrieving, and displaying large 3 dimensional geographic data sets in an OpenGL/Java3D environment. Five possible schemes for the storage and retrieval of Digital Elevation Models from the United States Geological Survey are tested for disk space usage, memory usage and load times. These implementations exercise and compare data formats including, standard USGS DEM data, binary elevation data, complete rendering data, and compressed rendering data. It was discovered that the use of compressed rendering data provided the best trade off between load times and disk space.
