Photon polarization in the radiative recombination of high-Z, hydrogen-like ions

Density matrix theory is applied to re-investigate the radiative recombination and radiative electron capture of high-Z ions. Attention has been paid particularly to the polarization of the emitted photons. For the recombination of a free electron into the K-shell of Bi83+ projectiles, we calculated the angular-dependent Stokes parameters for the X-ray emission. We also discuss the importance of the choice of the quantization axis for understanding the polarization properties of the system both for the residual ion and the emitted light.
