Comparisons of melt strength were made between various types of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE). Of the materials tested, high melt strength (HMS) PP shows the highest melt tension, Compared with conventional PP, at the same MFR, HMS PP can have melt tensions ten times higher. A similar relationship is observed between HDPE and LDPE, however, the difference is smaller, approximately five times. At a given MFR, HMS PP has a greater melt tension than LDPE. For example, at a MFR of 3, HMS PP has a melt tension of 28 cN whereas LDPE has a melt tension of 8 cN. HMS PP can be used in applications when both high melt strength and PP properties are desired.
