When the unusual behaviour or psychic dysfunctioning of an elderly person is connected to relationships within the family or with other significant persons, systemic or family therapy has precedence. The main features of systemic therapy and subsequently the modifications of the psychotherapeutic treatment necessary in dealing primarily with elderly patients are described, using an example of an depressed elderly woman patient and the relationships within her family. The context of the patient's referral, the clarification of the treatment plan, as well as the structure of relationships over several generations and their systemic relevance are considered. Also mentioned: applying the genogram, typical ways in which elderly persons conceive reality, our ways of thinking about aging, common themes concerning aging and the resource-oriented approach.
