Suppression of spiral turbulence in two-component excitable media

摘要
Due to an instability with respect to transverse perturbations a wave propagating through a two-component excitable medium usually breaks into disconnected pieces which subsequently develop into spiral turbulence. It is shown here that this turbulence can be effectively suppressed by application of appropriately chosen boundary conditions. For instance, a stationary propagation of an excitation wave can be observed in an inhomogeneous medium which consists of a number of stripes characterized by different parameter values. Several types of stationary propagating patterns are observed depending on the geometry of the system. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
