摘要：

Higher Education was tardily introduced in Brazil and was subjected to great struggles to obtain achievements that enabled its evolution. The present study was developed in order to discuss the distribution and evolution of Higher Education in the State of Maranhao over a decade. Through the collection of bibliographical and documented data and, subsequently, of statistical analysis, it has been demonstrated that there has been a significant evolution in the number of higher education institutions, where the private sector occupies a prominent place, as well as the quantity of new entrants in the aforementioned institutions. Aspects related to the increase in demand for courses, public policies for access to higher education, and adherence to distance education were pointed out as the main influencing factors in this domination of private institutions in the Maranhao educational scenario, which is a reflection of the national scenario.
