Although Japanese mind fauna in the genus Pilophorus Hahn was recently updated, the identity of a pair of old specimens collected in 1949 from the subtropical Bonin Islands has remained unclear (Yasunaga el al., 2021). Two previous works (Carvalho, 1956; Schuh, 1984) identified these specimens as P. perplexus (Herrich-Schaeffer) and P. setulosus Horvath, respectively. However, both pilophorine species inhabit temperate deciduous forests of the Palearctic Region, and their occurrence on the subtropical oceanic islands remains questionable. We have now had an opportunity to locate and closely examine the specimens in question, which are deposited in the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Hawaii (BPBM). They were determined to represent an undescribed species, described herein as new to science. Matrix code labels were attached to the type-series [e.g., AMNH_PBI 00012345], which are searchable (by species name) on the database, 'Heteroptera Species Pages' (http://research.amnh.org/pbi/heteropteraspeciespage/). All measurements are given in nun. Terminology of the genitalia mainly follows Schuh (1984), Schuh & Schwartz (1988). Yasunaga & Duwal (2016) and Yasunaga et al. (2021). This is contribution 2021-002 to the Pacific Biological Survey. Before going further, the authors thank Dr. M. D. Schwartz (Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, Ottawa) and Dr. K. L. Menard (Zootaxa subject editor) for reviewing and commenting on the manuscript.
