Approximate formulae for electron impact excitation of ions to highly excited levels

摘要
Approximate formulae are obtained for the cross-sections for excitation of ions of any complexity to highly excited levels by electron impact. These formulae are expressed in a simple way in terms of cross sections of the same form as hydrogenic cross sections. Results are given for the cases that jj coupling basis states are used, LS coupling basis are used, and pure LS coupling applies. The results are expected to be of particular interest for plasma applications.
