Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on neuromuscular fatigue in healthy subjects: a randomized controlled trial

Introduction: New non-invasive techniques have been developed to modulate brain function, among them transcranial direct current stimulation (TDCS), characterized by a weak electrical current applied to the scalp. In this context, TDCS appears as a tool in studies about mechanisms involved in the development of neuromuscular fatigue. The purpose of this trial was to verify the effect of TDCS on neuromuscular fatigue in healthy individuals during muscle training. Materials and Methods: The sample was composed by 18 individuals of both sexes, practicing physical activity, divided in 2 groups, active group (n=10) performing physical exercise with TDCS, and control group (n=8) performing physical exercise without TDCS. Results: Both groups had electromyographic signs related to the appearance of muscle fatigue, but without significant difference, demonstrating that the training proposed, with and without the use of TDCS, was effective in delaying the signs of neuromuscular fatigue, emphasizing that the active group showed significant increase in electromyographic activity of the quadriceps (p=0,005). Conclusion: TDCS associated with physical exercise and exercise alone in healthy and active individuals may increase muscle recruitment and decrease the appearance of neuromuscular fatigue.
