gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) or gamma-Fe2O3/TiO2 nanofibers (NFs) were added into the photoanode to modify the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The material properties of gamma-Fe2O3/TiO2 NFs were characterized by X-ray diffractometer and field emission scanning electron microscope. Through the measurements of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, incident photon to current efficiency, and J-V characteristics, the photovoltaic performances of the DSSCs with different photoanodes were analyzed, including impedance parameters, short-circuit current density, open-circuit voltage, fill factor and photoelectric conversion efficiency. The results show that the use of gamma-Fe2O3/TiO2 NFs as an additional layer in the photoanode provides the best result in the photovoltaic performance of the DSSC. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of the DSSC with the photoanode modified by gamma-Fe2O3/TiO2 NFs is increased to 5.65% with an increase by 49%, whereas compared with the unmodified DSSC (3.79%). In addition, the photovoltaic performances of the DSSC with the photoanode modified by gamma-Fe2O3/TiO2 NFs under different intensities of illumination have been observed. The DSSC with the photoanode modified by gamma-Fe2O3/TiO2 NFs has the best photoelectric conversion efficiency at 7.40%, when the light intensity is 30 mW/cm(2).
