Two new species of Mantoscyphidia Jankowski, 1980 (Ciliophora: Peritrichia) gill symbionts of limpets, from South Africa and the Sub-Antarctic Island, Marion

In a comprehensive survey of 19 limpet species representing three genera along the South African coast, an ectosymbiotic peritrich was found attached to the gills of specimens of all limper species examined. This species differs from all the known Mantoscyphidia Jankowski, 1980 species based on body morphology and details of the nuclear apparatus and is described as a new species, M. branchi sp. n. In a similar investigation of the limper fauna from a Sub-Antarctic Island in the Southern Ocean, another Mantoscyphidia species was found associated with the only limper, Nacella delesserti (Phillips, 1849), occurring on Marion Island. This is described as a new species, M. marioni sp, n. These descriptions are based on light and scanning electron microscopy.
