To provide Zr-96 beam from the laser ion source, we are investigating the characteristics of sintered Zr oxide target. Zirconium has several isotopes and Zr-96 occupies only about 2 - 3%. Therefore, to provide intense Zr-96 beam, the laser target material needs to be enriched. Enriched Zr-96 may be easily obtained as oxide powder form in the market, we are testing natural abundance Zr oxide powder instead of expensive enriched material. As a method of creating an oxide laser target, sintering is being tried. In the laser plasma from the sintered oxide target, impurities including oxygen ions were observed. We also measured target material consumptions assuming realistic laser irradiation conditions those may be employed in the RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) experiment in the next year.
