Poly(4-vinylpyridine) vinyl acetate vinyl alcohol copolymer blends: 1. Infrared spectroscopic studies of hydrogen bond formation

摘要
Miscibility of blends of poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) with vinyl acetate-vinyl alcohol(VAc-VAL) copolymers of different compositions has been investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) results indicate that P4VP is miscible with VAc-VAL copolymers containing more than 30 mole% VAL. Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) analysis of the miscible blends of P4VP with VAc-VAL copolymers reveal the existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between hydroxyl groups and vinyl pyridines. High temperature infrared spectroscopic analysis of VAc-VAL copolymers and P4VP/VAc-VAL blends indicate that there are at least three competing processes for hydrogen bonding to the hydroxyl groups in the blends: hydroxyl-hydroxyl, hydroxyl-carbonyl, and hydroxyl-pyridine associations.
