摘要
Background Physical activity can support the maintenance of an independent and healthy life, especially in higher age. In view of the aging population, the need for better prevention concepts becomes clear. Objectives Our recent survey study identified the importance and potential of general practitioner (GP) care when it comes to motivating patients to participate in exercise, fitness and health services. Materials and methods In the course of a waiting room survey, between November 2018 and April 2019, a total of 324 patients, age 70 and older, were interviewed in 25 GP offices (Mayen-Koblenz district, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany). Results Half of the respondents regularly pursue physical activities. A problem is that there is a lack of health and exercise offers suitable for one's own (health) situation. Also, many respondents have no overview of what courses are available in their proximity. GPs are given great trustworthiness and reliability as a guide to health and exercise. In all, 48% of the respondents say that their GP has already recommended more physical activity. In fact, 39% were made aware of specific sports, fitness or health offers by the GP. Of these, 85% have decided to try the recommendation. Overall, 88% would like GPs to work more closely with health course providers. Discussion The results show that the GP is in a particularly favorable position to provide exercise, fitness and health services to the elderly and motivate them to participate. Therefore, GPs should be encouraged to take such a mediator function in the sense of prevention. For this, it seems urgent to act in local and municipal networks for health promotion and to train GPs and the practice staff accordingly.
