Hospitalized patients are commonly malnourished at admission or become so during their hospital stay. Morbidity associated with malnutrition can be greatly decreased with artificial nutrition. Because prolonged (>1 wk) starvation is detrimental to patients, nutritional screening followed by nutritional support is of critical importance, not only for patients' general welfare but also for healing. Nutritional support should be given through the enteral route whenever possible. Should the need for tube feedings exceed 2 to 4 wk, a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube or other more permanent route of enteral nutritional support should be considered.
