Antibacterial finishing of cotton textiles using neem extract

Neem (Azadirachta indica) extracts, widely used by Indian farmers to protect cotton crop from pests and fungi, have potential as antibacterial agents for textiles. Cotton fabric was treated with Neem seed or bark extract with a crosslinking agent using either conventional- or microwave-curing methods, Both the seed- and bark-extract treated fabrics showed high antibacterial activity compared to the control sample. The washing durability, crease recovery angle, tensile strength, and tearing strength of these finished fabrics were evaluated. Seed-extract treated fabric retained antibacterial activity for up to five machine washes, while activity for the bark-extract treatment decreased sharply with prolonged washing. Crease recovery decreased after both treatments with no significant change in tensile strength and a slight improvement in tearing strength.
