Aspirating nonneoplastic ovarian cysts - Rationale, technique, and controversy

Debate continues on the accuracy, safety and efficacy of needle aspiration in diagnosis and treatment of cystic ovarian lesions. The procedure allows early diagnosis of carcinoma, both primary and metastatic; can cause decreased morbidity and mortality because surgery for benign disease is avoided; and preserves fertility. On the other hand the procedure may possibly cause leakage or spillage of tumor material along the needle track, or may lead to infection, hemorrhage, or false-positive or false-negative diagnoses. The procedure is accepted widely, however, for specific indications where benefits outweigh risks.
