The article draws attention to the insufficiently studied genre of inscription of the 18th century. Important studies have been devoted to the small poetic forms of the epigram and the epitaph of the period, but the inscription, because of the vagueness of the exact genre definition, has not yet received due attention. The article offers a general preliminary outline of the data concerning this genre in the 18th century, and the analysis of certain inscriptions in the works by Derzhavin.
