Atrial fibrillation in young Greek patients

The aim of our study was to determine the clinical presentation and risk factors of new-diagnosed atrial fibrillation (AF) in Greek patients younger than 55 years old, treated in cardiology department of an industrial area. During two-years period, 25 young patients, mean age 44 years, with AF entered into our study. AF in patients younger than 5 5 years was more common in athletes, heavy smokers and industrial workers, while more frequently first manifested during effort, with symptoms of heart failure and long-lasting palpitations. The most common organic causes of AF in young patients were pericarditis, WPW syndrome, hyperthyroidism, atrial septal defect and cardiomyopathy.
