摘要
Purpose of the study: To develop and implement an integrated activity programme, custom-designed for demented patients in mild and moderate stages of the condition and who are based in long-term care facilities in the Free State, South Africa. Method: The study was qualitative in design, allowing the researcher to gather information within the actual environment of a dementia unit situated at a long-term care facility. An inductive exploratory study was conducted where the effect of certain activities and techniques was observed and interaction monitored to identify which activities enhance interaction and activity. Data was analysed through content analysis drawn from observations. Suitable activities were selected on the discretion of the researcher and caregivers. Findings: Although it is assumed that persons with dementia benefit from being involved in meaningful activity, the way in which individuals with dementia perceive this involvement is poorly understood. The study in question found that each person challenged by dementia remains a distinctive individual with unique needs and preferences. Results proved that different activities are enjoyed in the various stages of dementia and that prescribed therapeutic activities are not suited for every dementia case. The individualism of the patient needs to be valued.
