Three studies were conducted to assess the utility of the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA; Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980) to predict college students' Intention to seek professional psychological services for alcohol abuse. Consistent with our hypotheses, Subjective Norm and Attitude contributed significantly to the prediction of Intention to seek help for alcohol abuse. Also consistent with our hypotheses, Outcome Beliefs and Normative Beliefs were not predictive of Intention. Overall, the TRA accounted for 12% of the variance in the Intention to seek help. Clinical implications and limitations of this study are also addressed.
