摘要
Asthma is characterized by typical symptoms, variable airway obstruction and airway inflammation. Most patients with asthma are well controlled when treated with inhaled corticosteroids. However, around 10% have severe asthma, and remain symptomatic and/or at risk of asthma attacks despite maximum inhaled therapy. Identification of eosinophilic airways inflammation is particularly important as biological agents blocking interleukin (IL)-5, IL-13 and both IL-4 and 13 are effective treatments in this sub-group. The future will be identification of potentially responsive patients on the basis of biomarkers rather than arbitrary physiological patterns of disease, and targeted treatment with specific cytokine blockade.
