Structural transitions of 3-dimensional Coulomb crystals in a dusty plasma

Face-centered cubic and body-centered tetragonal Coulomb crystals in a dusty plasma were formed by growing fine-particles and observed from the top and the side at the same time with the use of two CCD video cameras. Time and space structural transitions between the two structures were analyzed from video images. It was suggested that the structural transitions occurred by the slip of crystal planes of fcc(111) and bct(110) parallel to the electrode. The structural transitions of three-dimensional Coulomb crystals in dusty plasmas simulate well those of real metallic crystals.
