Revision of the 'Polygala herbiola group' (Polygalaceae): a new species and a new variety

The delimitation of Polygala herbiola (series Trichospermae) is revised from a morphological perspective, resulting in a new species, Polygala michelliana, and a new variety, P. herbiola var. minensis. Polygala michelliana is endemic to the mountain range Chapada dos Veadeiros, Goias state, whereas the new variety, P. herbiola var. minensis, occurs in the Serra da Canastra and Serra do Espinhaco, both in Minas Gerais state. A full description, taxonomic key, distribution map, and morphological plates are provided for the two varieties of Polygala herbiola and its two allied species, P. michelliana and P. chapadensis.
