Effects of friction and threshold stress intensity factor on mixed-mode I and II fatigue crack growth behavior

Four-point bending and shear specimens made of SAE 1045 steel were asymmetrically loaded under different initial K-II/K-I ratios to study mixed-mode fatigue crack growth behavior. Under mode II load dominating cases, friction effect on fatigue crack growth rate was observed. A simple model is proposed to quantify this effect in terms of crack wake roughness. Mixed-mode fatigue crack growth threshold stress intensity factors were also obtained for the material under mode II load dominating conditions. Mode II threshold stress intensity factor range was found to be twice larger than the mode I threshold stress intensity factor range.
