An increasingly large percentage of the steel made in arc steelmaking furnaces (ASFs) worldwide is being produced with the use of metallized raw materials. One of the important problems in controlling the steelmaking operation is optimizing the temperature regime so as to ensure attainment of the prescribed finishing temperature. This article examines certain aspects of the melting of metallized pellets in the bath of an ASF and the effect of this process on the temperature regime of the steelmaking operation. A mathematical model is proposed for the thermal state of an ASF bath. The model includes continuous monitoring of the position of the electric arc and the optimum degree of superheating of the melt in order to attain the prescribed finishing temperature.
